5 Indoor Activities for Toddlers

By Amanda Swank, Publisher of Mac KID Winter Haven - Davenport, Florida April 24, 2024

Need some ideas to keep your toddler busy on a rainy day? We’ve got you covered (haha… get it?). Here are five simple ideas for indoor activities with your kiddo.

  1. Sensory Bins: Create a sensory bin by filling a shallow container with materials like rice, pasta, beans, or sand. Add small toys, scoops, and cups for toddlers to explore textures, practice pouring, and engage their senses. They’ll love it! It’s minimal work for you and will keep them entertained for quite some time.

  1. Arts and Crafts: Set up a craft area in your home with washable paints, crayons, markers, stickers, colored paper, and other craft items. Give them some ideas and let them run with them, or get involved and make some gems along with them! Mom tip: put a paint mat or some other covering down on the floor under your crafting area just in case of spills. Which will save you time on the clean-up later.

  1. Indoor Obstacle Course: Design a simple obstacle course using cushions, pillows, tunnels, painter’s tape, soft play equipment, etc. Encourage toddlers to crawl, climb, and jump through the course, developing their gross motor skills while having fun. You can even sneak some extra learning in by incorporating the alphabet, counting, or other educational pops like that.

  1. Pretend Play: Enjoy some pretend play with dress-up costumes, dolls, stuffed animals, and play kitchen sets. Encourage your kiddo to use their imagination and role-play different scenarios, such as cooking a meal or going on a pretend adventure. Have a tea party, or go on an imaginary vacation, the possibilities are truly endless!

  1. Music and Movement: Play upbeat music and encourage toddlers to dance, jump, and move around the room. If you have musical instruments like tambourines, maracas, or other small instruments, encourage them to make their own music along to the beat!

These activities can keep your kiddos engaged for hours! The best part? You can do the activities together! Don’t be afraid to be silly. These are the moments they’ll remember, and the moments YOU’LL remember.
